Tour 9:Dessau - Bauhaus Town in the Garden Realm


About an hour car ride away from Berlin there is Dessau, the city of the Bauhaus, the famous design school. With the moving of the Bauhaus from Weimar to Dessau great designers, artists, architects and their students came to the former residence town of the Anhaltine Dynasty. Walter Gropius, as director of the world-famous Bauhaus, designed the schoolbuilding and many others. Besides these exclusive architectual pieces of the 20th century there are palaces and parks of the 17th and 18th century in and around the city. The famous Woerlitz Park as well as the Bauhausbuildung and the Master Houses by Gropius are listed as Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO.

Following places can be visited in the town:

  • the Bauhaus School Building
  • the Master Houses, houses for the masters, the famous teachers of the school like Klee, Kandinsky, Feininger, Nagy, Schlemmer and Muche; one of these houses is the Kurt- Weil-Memorial with a museum today
  • the residential area Dessau-Toerten, designed by Gropius
  • the Jobcenter by Gropius a.o.

The Restaurant “Kornhaus” designed by Carl Flieger ,a student of Gropius, offers local food and beer and a beautiful view of the landscape of the river Elbe.
